Salt and Sand with Lauren Caruso

Lauren Caruso Circa Now Style Interview A Part of the Rest 1.jpg

We chat with fashion editor Lauren Caruso about minimalist dressing in vintage this August.

Hi Lauren, tell us a little bit about yourself: (Where you're from/ where you live/ what you do/ fun facts/ etc...)

Hi! I'm Lauren, and I'm the managing editor at The Zoe Report. I'm originally from New Jersey, and moved to NYC 6 years ago when I was an editor at Refinery29. In my spare time, I love to shop (!), find new hidden gems in the city, and hang with my adorable nephew Xavier.

If you could describe your personal style with three words, they would be:

A trend-curious minimalist

As a  fashion writer and editor, tell us about how vintage style blends into your work life:

It's easy to get caught up in the trend cycle when a lot of what you do is write about it, but vintage sort of forces you to slow down. It makes you get creative about your style, which I love. Anyone can go out and buy the $1,000 piece everyone else is wearing (or the $50 knockoff from Zara), but shopping vintage means you're hunting for a piece that fits into your style, rather than adopting a different style just to wear a trend.

Do you have any tips for shopping vintage from an editor's stand point?

From an editor stand point, I'd always recommend to look for vintage pieces that aren't stained, don't require a ton of tailoring (or any tailoring if you're never *actually* going to take it in), and make you feel like the best version of you. Also, and I say this with most pieces, make sure you can envision wearing it more than one way, and ideally, in more than one season. That ensures you're not buying something that's just going to make a home inside your closet unless the conditions specifically call for it.

What's on your vintage shopping list for August?

I can't stop buying oversized blazers and knee-length shorts, but somehow, I know I'm going to spend the next month searching for more!

Our theme for the month is Salt & Sand... Tell us about your ideal day  hanging out on the water or the shore this August and what would you wear?

I'm actually headed to Florida with my best friend, my sister, and my nephew in August! I love wearing a high-waisted bikini with an oversized button-down shirt as a makeshift coverup. I always bring a basket bag, tapestry, and a good book.

You are known for your clean neutral style... what tips do you have for keeping that minimalist aesthetic while staying fresh and updated.

I always recommend finding basics that have a subtle twist, like a denim midi skirt with a high side-slit, or a silk slip dress with a draped neckline, or a pair of boots with a O-ring zipper.

Finally, what are your FAVORITE vintage pieces in your closet right now?

I looooove my vintage short-sleeve blazer from The Break, a pair of Levi's from Stella Dallas that make my butt look amazing, and all the skirts I hoard from Elia Vintage!
